High Society I (Detail), 2011, Ceramic, majolica glaze

This is a ceramic multi-tiered form inspired by the structure of class systems. I was inspired by etchings by Goya and James Ensor etchings especially an etching by the latter titled Fight of the Down-and-Outs and an Industrial Workers of the World poster based on a 19th century Italian illustration of the same subject titled Pyramid of Capitalist System. In High Society I, I use the format of a multi-tiered dessert platter where wealth and capital is gorged at the top, followed by the religious and propagandist or chattering class, then enforcement, the police and military, then the shrinking middle class, and then the poor. I'm working on a series of these to explore different types of social structures.
